Office Of The Vice Chancellor
The Office of the Vice Chancellor is the apex executive office of Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE). The Vice Chancellor serves as the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the Institute, providing strategic leadership and overall direction in the implementation of UNITE's mandate, vision, and mission. The office is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Institute, coordination of all academic, administrative, and financial affairs, and ensuring accountability to the UNITE Council. The Vice Chancellor Chairs Top Management, represents the Institute in external engagements, and ensures compliance with the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (UOTIA), relevant statutes, and government directives. The office drives institutional excellence, quality assurance, and the pursuit of UNITE's goal of becoming a global centre of excellence in innovative teacher education.
About The Vice Chancellor
Assoc. Prof. Betty Akullu Ezati is the pioneer Vice Chancellor of the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE). As the chief executive and academic head of the Institute, she is responsible for providing strategic leadership and oversight over the academic, administrative, and financial affairs of the institution. In the absence of the Chancellor, she presides over ceremonial assemblies of the Institute and confers degrees and other academic distinctions.
Prof. Ezati is a distinguished Ugandan teacher educator, researcher, curriculum specialist, and higher education leader with extensive experience spanning teaching, academic administration, policy development, and educational transformation.
She holds a PhD in Education from Makerere University and has undertaken advanced professional training and postgraduate studies at internationally renowned institutions including the University of Alberta in Canada, Lund University in Sweden, and the University of Cape Town in South Africa.
Prior to her appointment at UNITE, Prof. Ezati served at Makerere University where she made history as the first female Dean of the School of Education. During her tenure, she championed curriculum reform, teacher professionalization, quality assurance, and innovations in teacher education.
Prof. Ezati has published over 50 scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters focusing on teacher education, pedagogy, curriculum transformation, educational leadership, and inclusive learning. She has also served as an external examiner for several universities within and outside Uganda.
A Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Ezati has contributed significantly to national and international policy discussions on teacher education and educational reform. She is widely recognized for her advocacy of blended learning and flexible teacher upgrading Programmes aimed at supporting teachers to transition from certificate qualifications to degree-level education.
Her leadership at UNITE continues to shape the transformation of teacher education in Uganda through innovation, professionalism, research, and institutional excellence.
