Overview
The Department of Secondary Education — Science, Arts and Vocational Studies is responsible for training teachers for Uganda’s post-primary education system across a wide range of subject disciplines. The Department prepares graduates who are competent, innovative and ethically grounded to teach in secondary schools and other post-primary institutions. Drawing on UNITE’s philosophy of vocalisation of teacher education, the Department integrates subject mastery with strong pedagogical skills, equipping teacher graduates to make learning relevant, engaging and transformative in the classrooms they serve.
Role and Functions
The Department delivers Bachelor of Education degree programmes in the Sciences, Humanities, and Vocational and Arts disciplines. It provides pre-service training for Senior Six leavers and upgrading pathways for diploma holders and in-service teachers seeking degree-level qualifications. The Department coordinates curriculum delivery, practical teaching experiences, microteaching, and teaching practice across all UNITE campuses, ensuring consistent quality and standards in secondary teacher education nationwide.
