Department Of Primary And Pre-Primary Education
Education goes beyond textbooks and classrooms. We believe in empowering students to explore their passions challenge conventions.
Overview
The Department of Primary and Pre-Primary Education trains teachers for the foundational years of a child’s learning journey from Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) through to the upper primary classroom. Recognising that the quality of early learning shapes lifelong outcomes, the Department is committed to producing teachers who are nurturing, skilled, and deeply knowledgeable about child development, inclusive pedagogy, and community-responsive teaching. The Department embodies UNITE’s philosophy of vocationalisation of teacher education ensuring that every graduate is ready to lead an active, purposeful and child-centred classroom from day one.
Role and Functions
The Department delivers bachelor’s degree and diploma programmes for pre-primary and primary school teachers, covering Early Childhood Education (ECE), Arts, and Sciences. It coordinates practical teaching experiences, teaching practice placements, and curriculum delivery across all UNITE campuses to ensure that programmes are consistently delivered to national and institutional standards. The Department works closely with the Ministry of Education and Sports, the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC), and partner schools to keep its programmes responsive to the evolving needs of Uganda’s primary and pre-primary education sector.
