There are six core values that UNITE desires to uphold. These are:

  1. Professionalism: committed to upholding the teaching profession and promoting professional growth. Professionalism will be exhibited in appearance, language and behavior.
  2. Integrity: Demonstrating ethical standards and discipline expected of the teacher. Having an impeccable behavior and character. Integrity involves behaving honorably even when no one is watching.
  3. Innovativeness: Being creative and generating new knowledge and skills through teaching, learning and educational research for community based problem-solving.
  4. Accountability: Holding and exercising the teaching profession in trust and taking responsibility for the decisions and indecisions in respect of UNITE mandate and objects.
  5. Life-long Learning: Motivating clients to keep relevant through career progression and professional development.
  6. Autonomy: Producing teachers who are responsibly in charge of their teaching profession and have freedom to exercise their innovative skills.

It is good to note that each of the core values has been described in the context of the teaching profession and their acronym is PIIALA for mnemonic purposes.

Philosophy: The philosophy of UNITE is the vocationalisation of teacher education and training by focusing on practice and hand-on experiences as basis of teaching and learning. Vocationalisation spans through all teacher education programme courses. Hence, UNITE philosophy puts emphasis on exposing the student teachers and in-service teachers to the practical experiences of the world of work through the BELIEVE-TEACH/LEARN-PRACTISE model. This model demands teachers to have belief in what they preach as worthwhile knowledge, essential for improving every individual student’s life. Knowledge taught and learned must transit into livelihoods that contribute to better standards of living and enable every student to contribute to family, community and national development. By vocationalising teacher education, UNITE will endeavor to prepare teachers who will equip students for employability and productivity through immediate application of knowledge. Parents will no longer wait for 19 years to see their children apply the knowledge learnt at school. Every topic/theme will result into advancement in increase in knowledge with intellectual abilities to rationalize and take well informed decisions (K), skill performance (S); values emanating from appreciation of knowledge (V) observable change in behavior (B). Every teaching/learning experience will be characterized by the KSVB DNA; making learning experiences not only memorable but empowering for life.
